Greek Life Benefits

Friendship

Sorority membership brings lasting friendships.  Sisterhood is a friendship with a special bond unlike any other.  This friendship lasts well past collegiate years.

Success

Sororities have strong traditions of high academic standards.  They are an academic support system.  In addition, scholarships and fellowships are awarded annually to members.

Leadership

Sororities provide leadership opportunities for women who will become respected professionals and community leaders.  Serving as an officer helps members develop responsibility and other leadership skills.

Activities

Sorority social life has its roots in the founding years.  Today, social activities include dances, theme parties with fraternities and other sororities, Greek Week, and other informal get-togethers.   Additionally, Greek women participate in intramural sports, student government, and other campus organized activities.

Athletics

Women's health is a topic of interest in sororities.  Sorority members may choose to participate in campus athletic programs or sorority teams.

Networking

The bonds developed during college last long after graduation.  Sorority women are encouraged to join local alumnae groups where they have the opportunity to make new friends or adjust to a new community.

Hazing and/or Unacceptable Behavior

At no time is unacceptable behavior or hazing allowed.  If you find yourself in any situation in which you feel uncomfortable, be sure to notify the appropriate people.  The chapter advisor, College Panhellenic, or the National Headquarters of the sorority in question would all be good contacts. No one should ever be made to do anything they are uncomfortable with by anyone they feel is in a position of authority!  (Including new members or potential members.)

Sorority Recruitment

Recruitment is a mutual selection process that allows sororities to recruit new members and new members to see where they might best fit in.  Recruitment is a way of finding the best spot for each individual in the Panhellenic system.  It is also a great way to meet many new people.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for Recruitment

How do I register for Recruitment?
The first step is to contact the University or College that you will be attending and talk to the Greek Office or Panhellenic Office. These are generally listed under Student Activities on the University WebPages. They will send you a registration form and any literature about Recruitment pertaining to the university that you will need.

Do I need a Reference to participate in Recruitment?
It is not necessary or required to have a reference to participate in Recruitment.  Each sorority has different methods of handling references.  A reference or letter of introduction could be sent to each of the organizations on the campus where you will be enrolled.  This is a good way for the chapters to know you before you arrive on campus.

What is a Reference?
A Reference is a form or letter of introduction that is completed by an alumnae member of a particular sorority.  This form is mailed to the chapter house and serves to introduce you to the chapter.  The alumnae member does not have to be an alumnae of the university or college you are attending only the NPC organization.

What information will this alumnae need to complete my Reference?
An organized list of information about yourself, such as a resume, is best to give to the alumnae.  This resume should include your name, home address and telephone number, name of parents, and school address (if known).  You will also need to include High School, GPA, , any awards or honors you have received, and activities that you participated in school.  Do not forget to include community service or jobs that you held.  It is helpful to include a wallet size picture.  Remember, this resume tells the alumnae and the chapter something about you.  Keep it simple but informative.

I am a Legacy.  What does that mean?  Do I include this in my information?
Each NPC group has a definition of a legacy.  Generally, it means that your grandmother, mother, stepmother, or sister is a member of an NPC group and you are a legacy to that group.  You could be a legacy to more than one NPC group.  It is always a nice gesture for the mother, grandmother, or sister to write a personal note to the chapter regarding the legacy.  This does not guarantee membership, but it does give the chapter and the prospective member the opportunity to get to know each other.
